Dragoons Fire Back
The Dragoons faced off against Iskra Krzęcin under the lights this past Friday evening with both sides on the hunt for their first three points of the season.
Following a disappointing defeat last time out against Nadwiślan Kraków, Head Coach Gonçalo Ferreira made three changes to his starting lineup.

Jake Hedrick continued between the posts for his fourth appearance for the club0. Meanwhile, the backline saw a key change as Mateo Lopez dropped back into defence to partner debutant Joseph Vargas, as both Kuba Drobny and Clement De Almeida missed out. Szymon Urzędowski continued at left-back, while Kamil Kącki lined up once again at right-back.
Further up the pitch, captain Enrico Forabosco returned to the starting XI alongside Fernando Gámez and Rob Smits. In attack, Flavio Nkola and Adrian Paliś joined Mirko Barile in a revamped front three. Martin Voženílek and birthday boy Giordano Zambon dropped to the bench.
Slow Start, Fast Response
The Dragoons created the first opening in the 3rd minute when Adrian Paliś raced onto a pass, but failed to trouble the keeper with a low strike.
In the 5th minute, Hedrick was forced into action for the first time. A poor cross came into the box and the American Keeper gathered the ball with ease.
As the game progressed, Iskra began to take control of the early exchanges. 12th minutes into the game, the hosts got into the Dragoons box and forced Hedrick to push the ball around the post.
A Midfield Scrap
The Expats continued to struggle with ball retention as Iskra turned over possession time and time again. However, strong defending from the Dragoons restricted visitors to shots from range, that largely flew over the bar.
With 25 minutes on the clock, the Expats briefly threatened down the other end. Enrico Forabosco whipped in a dangerous corner that just evaded Nkola and Paliś in the six yard box.
Four minutes later, Forabosco stood at the heart of the action again. The maverick veteran sprayed a wide pass to find Kamil Kącki, who controlled masterfully, looped the ball over an opponent, and rattled a fierce shot against the rear stanchion.
The hosts continued to probe without creating any clear-cut chances. However, in the 33rd minute, Iskra suddenly burst to life as an attacker cut inside from the left and unleashed a fierce strike from the edge of the box, forcing Hedrick to react quickly and tip the ball over the bar.
Iskra Break the Deadlock
From the following corner into the box, the Expats inexplicitly left two men alone at the back post. The ball found Daniel Guguła completely unmarked and the Iskra man guided a low volley past Hedrick’s outstretched arm and into the net for 1-0.
Dragoons Hit Back to Equalise
However, that setback was the exact kick up the backside the Dragoons needed. Snapping straight out of their slumber, the Expats instantly upped the tempo and started moving the ball with terrifying purpose.
In the 40th minute, Mateo López launched a laser-guided, cross-field ping straight onto the boot of Flavio Nkola. The Angolan ghosted inside off the wing, carved open a inch of space, and unleashed an absolute beauty, curling an exquisite strike that kissed the inside of the post on its way into the net!

A Quickfire Second for the Expats
Moments later, the Dragoons caught the hosts completely cold at the back. Smits sent a clipped pass over the defence for Paliś to chase. The keeper rushed out but failed to gather cleanly, sparking a scramble in the box. Nkola reacted sharply to nip onto the loose ball, going down over the keeper’s outstretched arm.
With play continuing, the ball broke to Paliś, who sent a weak effort bobbling towards the empty net. A recovering defender managed to slide and clear off the line, but the ball fell straight to Kamil Kącki. The right-back made no mistake to score, gleefully stabbing home from close range to complete the quickfire comeback before half-time.

In truth, the Dragoons only truly woke up once Iskra took the lead. A moment of magic from Nkola and a moment of madness in the hosts’ backline rapidly turned the game on its head. For once, the Expats pounced on their opponent’s mistakes rather than suffering from their own, taking a 2-1 lead into the break!
Second Half
The Expats emerged for the second half looking to extend their lead immediately. Fernando Gámez picked up possession in the middle of the park after good work from Mirko Barile and drove forward with purpose, picking out Nkola on the left flank. The Angolan immediately slid a pass into the box, handing Adrian Paliś a golden opportunity to double the Expats’ lead. However, with just the keeper to beat, the usually deadly striker showed zero composure, fluffing his lines completely with an absolutely terrible side-footed finish that rolled wide of the post.
Iskra looked to go on the offensive themselves after putting the Dragoons under pressure. Thankfully, the Expats defence held firm, forcing shots from range that once again cleared the Expats bar.
Dragoons Ring the Changes
In the 54th minute, Smits nearly turned in a dangerous cross before being replaced a minute later by Jeremi Wabiński, alongside Martin Voženílek coming on for Mirko Barile.
A minute after the change, Nkola almost added a third. The attacker met a dead-ball delivery from Forabosco but could only send a diving header over the bar.
The Dragoons turned to their bench once again and the flurry of substitutions temporarily disrupted the Dragoons’ rhythm, allowing Iskra to push forward and send a series of long-range shots flying over Hedrick’s bar.
Dragoons Add a Third
Gradually, the hosts began to tire as the Dragoons regained their momentum and wrestled control of the contest. In the 71st minute, the Expats struck again as Forabosco whipped in a dangerous corner that bounced viciously inside the six-yard box. Rattled by heavy pressure from Jeremi Wabiński, the Iskra defence panicked, and a defender could only watch in horror as he accidentally bundled the ball into his own net to make it 1-3 for the Expats!

Golazo
Just two minutes later, Forabosco produced a trademark moment of sheer magic to put the result beyond doubt. After substitute Jan Krzyżanowski was fouled, the midfield magician stepped up to the dead ball with typical swagger.
Waving his magic wand of a left foot, he whipped an unstoppable curling effort past the helpless keeper to register a stunning set-piece goal for the second game running! That majestic strike marked his second of the campaign and an incredible 58th goal for the club, further cementing his legendary status as a true Dragoons talisman. Not bad for a grumpy old git who is currently contemplating hanging up his boots at the end of the season!

Captain Fantastic
In the 75th minute, Forabosco capped off a true captain’s display at the other end of the pitch. Relying on sheer footballing intelligence, and perhaps simply being too knackered to stand anywhere else, he found himself stationed on the goal line to boot away a goalbound Iskra effort. Considering he had only felt capable of giving 60 minutes before kickoff, there he was late in the game single-handedly preserving the Dragoons’ 4-1 cushion.
Chance Galore
In the 85th minute, a misplaced pass from the Iskra defence fell straight to Jesus Andrade. The Colombian put a through ball for Wabiński, who broke through one-on-one, but side-footed wide of the target.
Two minutes later, Gámez looked to get in the act with a free-kick. The Canarian King sent a low curling effort around the wall, but a flying save from the keeper kept the ball out of the net.
As the game ticked into the 90th minute, the quick thinking of Gámez saw a quick free-kick taken to Martin Voženílek out wide. The Czech put a teasing cross into the box, with Barry Chowaniec getting a toe to divert the ball goalwards. However, Bober in the home goal showed smart reactions to deny the forward his first goal of the season.
Finally, in the 90th minute, great work from Wabiński allowed Chowaniec to burst clear on goal. The striker expertly rounded the keeper, only to take an absolute age to actually shot. By the time he finally pulled the trigger, a recovering defender had plenty of time to scramble back and clear his weak daisy-cutter off the line, leaving the forward with his head firmly in his hands.
The final whistle sounded moments later confirming the Dragoons’ first three points on the campaign. The result sees Iskra sit rock bottom of the early standings with the Dragoons moving up to tenth.

Summary
It was by no means a classic display, but a good three points. After a sluggish start, the Dragoons woke up, stretching the pitch and taking the game to the hosts. Having spent recent weeks shooting themselves in the foot, it was a refreshing change to actually capitalise on the other side’s blunders instead.
At the back, Mateo López helped talk debutant Joseph Vargas through the game. López’s versatility has certainly been a plus-point and he picked up an excellent assist for the equaliser. Experience shone where it counted, with Fernando Gámez, Flavio Nkola, Rob Smits, and Enrico Forabosco playing a big part in dragging the side back into the game. Meanwhile, Jeremi Wabiński came off the bench with the right attitude, showing plenty of battle and moments of quality in possession to give the coach a selection headache.
The only real worry is at the sharp end, where Adrian Paliś and Barry Chowaniec are currently operating as a slapstick comedy double-act in front of goal. Both desperately need to find their shooting boots to stop looking like they’ve won a prize to play upfront!
Next Up
The Expats hit the road again next week to face Radziszowianka Radziszów II. The opponents suffered an opening-day defeat against Pychowianka Kraków before bouncing back with a crushing 7-0 win over Iskra Krzęcin. Radziszowianka go into the game sitting third place in the table after securing a 4-1 victory away to Cedronka Wola Radziszowska this past weekend.
Historically, encounters between these two sides produce plenty of drama. Last season, Radziszowianka claimed a comfortable victory at the Dragoons’ home ground at Kampus UJ, but the Expats got their revenge away from home in a thrilling 4-3 win.
