Cruel Blow for Expats
Football can be a cruel game. Following a dismal 6-2 defeat against Skawinka Skawina on opening day, the Dragoons suffered another frustrating 2-1 loss against former landlords Nadwiślan Kraków on Sunday.

Team Selection
Head Coach Gonçalo Ferreira kept faith in his entire backline despite last weekend’s difficult outing. Jake Hedrick retained his spot between the sticks after his league debut performance. Right-back Kamil Kącki and left-back Szymon Urzędowski flanked the central defensive partnership of Kuba Drobny and Clément de Almeida.
Further forward, Mateo Lopez anchored the midfield once again. The Canarian King Fernando Gámez returned to the starting lineup alongside the Dutchmeester Rob Smits, who replaced Oscar Nunes in the lineup.
Meanwhile, Giordano Zambon earned his first start after an impressive cameo last week. Martin Voženílek and Mirko Barile retained their attacking positions, while Flavio Nkola dropped to the bench.
Kick Off
The match began quietly in the sweltering late summer heat as neither side managed to establish control early on.
Kamil Kącki created the first opening after twelve minutes. The right-back pushed forward and curled a speculative effort onto the roof of the net.
Neither team offered much going forward as both defences cancelled the other out. The next shot of note came twenty-three minutes into the half as the visitors sent a long-range free-kick harmlessly over the bar.
The Game Opens Up
On the midway point of the half, Fernando Gámez tried his luck from distance, but his strike flew high and wide. Kuba Drobny then headed a corner straight at the visiting goalkeeper as the Dragoons looked to take the game to the visitors.
The game began to open up as half-time approached. First, the Dragoons failed to connect with a corner and Nadwiślan countered with a quick counter. However, both Drobny and Kącki put their bodies on the line to deny a clear run on goal, with a resulting shot flying over the bar.
Immediately after, the Dragoons launched a swift break of their own. Szymon Urzędowski headed the ball down to Barile, who cut inside smoothly before curling a shot just wide of the post.
Three minutes later, Nadwiślan attacked again and Drobny made another crucial defensive intervention, turning a dangerous cross behind for a corner.
Dragoons Concede
Just as the half looked set to end goalless, disaster struck in injury time. The usually dependable Rob Smits played a risky pass towards Fernando Gámez in a congested midfield area, allowing Nadwiślan to intercept. The visitors quickly moved the ball wide and a low cross saw Mikołaj Gajda convert a tap-in from close range.
An awful blow, as the Dragoons had defended resolutely and looked fairly comfortable throughout the half.
Second Half: Nadwiślan Score Immediately
If the first goal was a blow, the second felt self-inflicted. Just two minutes into the second half, Clément de Almeida completely miskicked the ball as last man straight into the path of Adrian Prajsnar. The Nadwiślan forward gratefully took possession of the ball, ran through on goal and dispatched a low shot past Hedrick to double the visitors’ lead.
The Expats pushed forward bravely to find a route back into the game. However, Nadwiślan defended their penalty area resolutely and kept the Dragoons at bay with consummate ease.
Ringing the Changes
A double change on fifty-three minutes saw Gonçalo Ferreira take off the ineffective Martin Voženílek and Mirko Barile. Flavio Nkola came into the fray alongside new signing Jesus Andrade.
The beleaguered home side just could not seem to gain any control in the final third, too often making the wrong passing decision or a heavy touch causing promising moves to break down. Chances passed in the fifty-fifth minute as De Almeida could not connect with a corner into the box.
On the hour mark, a dreadful attempted pass from Kuba Drobny gave Nadwiślan an excellent chance for a third. On this occasion, Jake Hedrick came to the Expats rescue, showing smart reflexes to deny a certain goal by getting a strong hand to turn the ball just wide.
Gonçalo Ferreira reacted by making another double substitution on sixty-three minutes. Enrico Forabosco and Adrian Paliś entered the fray, replacing Smits and Zambon.
Dragoons Desperation
The Dragoons substitutes struggled to get into the game as the half passed by. The Dragoons started to rush in their desperation to get back into the game and Mateo Lopez dragged an effort wide in the seventy-first minute.
Moments after, a visibly frustrated Andrade had another shot from range. The Colombian got hold of his attempt well, but it flew well wide of the target.
Further drama unfolded in the seventy-eighth minute when Hedrick took a heavy touch in his own box under pressure. An attacker immediately looked to tackle the American stopper, who was adjudged to have committed a foul, with the referee immediately point to the spot. However, the Big Yank turned zero to hero, redeeming himself by diving smartly to his left to save the resulting spot-kick.
Moments later, Kącki was on the receiving end of a horrendous tackle, earning a free-kick which should have seen red. Enrico Forabosco whipped a dangerous ball into the box, missing everyone and bouncing agonisingly wide of the goal.
Down the other end in the eighty-fifth minute, Drobny then made a heroic late block to prevent Nadwiślan from extending their lead on the break.

A Masterful Hit
Finally, the Dragoons found a lifeline in the 88th minute after a driving run from Nkola won the Expats a free-kick. Midfield Magician, Forabosco rolled back the years as curled a perfect shot into the top corner to make it 1-2.
The Expats immediately poured forward in search of an equaliser. A minute later, Nkola was again fouled out wide to win his side another set-piece. Forabosco sent a curling ball into the box and Nkola rose highest in the six-yard box, but his header cleared the crossbar.
Despite late pressure, the referee blew the final whistle to condemn the Dragoons to a second loss in a row.

Reflection
Despite a vastly improved team performance, the Expats ultimately became the masters of their own downfall. Individual errors proved fatal, allowing the visitors to score twice against the run of play.
The final result certainly stings, yet the overall setup showed far greater structure than last week’s opener. The team displayed commendable togetherness and maintained a tight defensive shape for long spells. Nadwiślan created very few genuine openings, meaning the Dragoons effectively gifted them the victory through two momentary lapses of concentration. It is a bitter pill to swallow, but the Expats simply must eliminate these costly errors.
However, the team’s lingering concern remains a sharp lack of goalscoring threat. The Dragoons struggled inside the final third and failed to test the opposing keeper from open play. The Expats huffed and puffed, but struggled to put together many cohesive moves to break down a stubborn rearguard.
On a positive note, Mateo Lopez delivered a mature and composed performance at the base of midfield. The youngster moved the ball fluidly and broke up play smartly. His solid display gives Head Coach Gonçalo Ferreira a real selection headache moving forward.
Next Up: Iskra Krzęcin
The Dragoons must dust themselves off quickly as they prepare to face fellow winless side Iskra Krzęcin on Friday evening.
The Expats hold a strong recent record against Iskra. The sides drew 1-1 at home before the Dragoons secured a thrilling 4-2 away win late last season.
Iskra have also endured a dismal start to their campaign. After losing 3-1 away to Nadwiślan Kraków on opening day, they suffered a heavy 7-0 thrashing against Radziszowianka Radziszów II this past weekend.
With both sides desperately seeking their first points of the season, Friday’s clash promises to be an interesting encounter.
