Recap
Errors Cost Expats Dearly
The Dragoons faced Zwierzyniecki KS this past weekend on a chilly and breezy Sunday afternoon in Krakow. Following a promising performance last weekend against Trzebol, Head Coach Gonçalo Ferreira had a couple of enforced changes to make.
Marcin Obyrtacz to start in goal following his previous heroic man-of-the-match performance. At right back, Gracjan Bałuch kept his starting place to build defensive consistency. However, there was a change at left back as Giacomo Simonetti made his first start for the team. In central defence, Kuba Drobny partnered Joseph Vargas once again.
In the middle, Mateo Lopez, Enrico Forabosco, and Fernando Gámez remained in a creative looking trio.
Further forward, a half-fit Jeremi Wabiński valiantly started once again in attack. The Polish forward picked up an injury in the closing stages of last week and took to the field with his right leg heavily bandaged. Flavio Nkola returned to the team to replace Mirko Barile on the left flank. The Italian took a heavy knock last weekend to keep him out. Finally, Martin Voženílek replaced Kamil Kącki on the right side of the attack.

Kick Off
The Expats burst out of the gates quickly, immediately applying pressure on the Zwierzyniecki backline. Sensing an early opportunity, Enrico Forabosco whipped a dangerous, curling cross-shot that clipped the post before being scrambled behind for a corner.
Dragoons Lead Early
The resulting set-piece yielded instant dividends. Mateo Lopez flicked a touch onto Forabosco’s pinpoint delivery, causing an opponent to accidentally divert the ball past his own goalkeeper. With just two minutes on the clock, the Dragoons found themselves 1-0 up, completely uncharted territory for the side this season!

Refusing to take their foot off the gas, the visitors nearly doubled their advantage just four minutes later. Martin Voženílek tore down the right flank after Lopez’s excellent pass and fizzed a cross toward the awaiting Flavio Nkola. The Angolan attacker slid desperately to meet the delivery, agonisingly sending his volleyed effort just inches wide of the target.
Into the 10th minute of the game, the hosts had their first effort of a game. Thankfully, Obyrtacz watched on as Jarek Dziura’s fiercely struck effort flew over the bar.
Looking to double their lead, the Expats continued forward and won a corner in the 15th minute. Forabosco’s delivery saw the home side unable to clear but the Dragoons failed to take advantage as Wabiński could only drag an attempt wide.
End to End
Zwierzyniecki showed brief glimmers of danger, with Jarek Dziura threatening down the left flank. The home winger picked out Nataniel Pawelski, who launched a rasping 16th-minute effort that curled narrowly past the upright.
Down the other end, Nkola continued to act as the Dragoons’ main attacking outlet. Drifting in off the wing with pace and power, the Angolan looked to work a shooting opportunity before releasing Voženílek with a beautifully weighted forward pass. Clean through on goal, the Czech attacker aimed high, forcing the goalkeeper into a fingertip save over the crossbar.
After the Expats enjoyed relative control in the early stages, the match abruptly transformed into an end-to-end battle. The hosts threatened through Dziura once again. The experienced attacker beat Bałuch and fired at goal from a tight angle. However, a well-positioned Kuba Drobny managed to deflect the ball with his trailing leg, somehow keeping it out of the net.
Immediately after, the Dragoons countered rapidly through the explosive Nkola. The winger played a slick one-two with Forabosco before forcing a low save from the diving goalkeeper. Wabiński could not get enough on the rebound, perhaps regretting not leaving the loose ball for the onrushing Voženílek.
Off the Line
In the 24th minute, the hosts came agonisingly close to an equaliser following a poor pass from Lopez. Zwierzyniecki burst forward down the right, cutting the ball back to an unmarked Szymon Młodnicki on the edge of the box. The midfielder drilled a fierce effort toward the bottom corner, only for Drobny to stick out a crucial leg and block a certain goal.
Just two minutes later, the Expats surged back on the attack. Forabosco killed a high ball with an absolutely breathtaking touch. The midfield magician then arched a sublime cross to Wabiński, who displayed an excellent touch of his own before forcing the keeper into a diving save.
Despite their early dominance, the Dragoons slowly lost their grip on the game due to sloppy passing. The hosts began bypassing the midfield entirely with direct long balls putting the Expats under pressure.
On the half-hour mark, Lopez made another careless error in possession. This time, the mistake allowed a rapid counter-attack to penetrate down the Dragoons’ right flank. Fortunately, Gámez sprinted back diligently to intercept a dangerous pass across the face of goal, allowing Obyrtacz to gratefully gather the loose ball and end the threat.
Zwierzyniecki Equalise
Riding a wave of momentum, Zwierzyniecki inevitably found their deserved equaliser in the 32nd minute. After the Expats conceded a soft free-kick in a dangerous area, Jarek Dziura whipped a low delivery into the danger zone. Obyrtacz reacted brilliantly, sticking out a leg to make a fantastic initial save. However, Nkola completely failed to track the surging run of Piotr Kędziora. Taking full advantage of the Dragoons’ statuesque defending, Kędziora easily tapped the rebound home to make it 1-1.
Following the goal, Zwierzyniecki looked the likelier side to score again. The Dragoons struggled to deal with another long ball, offering the hosts a prime opportunity to take the lead. Once again, Drobny saved the day, positioning himself perfectly to block yet another dangerous effort.
As the half drew to a close, the Expats finally began to reassert some control. Both Nkola and Gámez attempted to restore the lead, but both sent their late shots wide of the target, leaving the sides deadlocked at the break.
Ultimately, the Dragoons had started brilliantly but failed to retain possession well enough to secure a two-goal cushion. This carelessness handed the momentum directly to the hosts, who ruthlessly punished the Expats, a frustrating pattern that has seemingly become the norm.
Second Half
After the break, the Dragoons went straight onto the offensive. Recycling possession immediately following a corner, Wabiński tested the keeper with a firm drive. Unfortunately, no teammate anticipated the loose, inviting rebound, and the chance passed.
The Hosts Lead
In the 52nd minute, the Dragoons shot themselves in the foot to concede a shocking second goal. Gámez’s pass struck an opponent, allowing Piotr Kędziora to pounce and drive forward. The attacker breezed past Simonetti, easily bypassed Vargas, and showed enough pace to keep Gámez at arm’s length as he burst through on goal. With only Obyrtacz to beat, Kędziora rolled the ball through the keeper’s legs to cap off a lung-busting, 70-yard dash virtually unchallenged. Absolute schoolboy defending at best from the Expats.
Immediate Strike-Back
Zwierzyniecki’s lead lasted just two minutes, however, as the Expats hit back in the 54th minute. Forabosco’s aimless hoof forward caught the hosts facing their own goal for once. A rushed clearance struck the pressing Wabiński and broke to Gámez. The Canarian King laid a simple pass off to Nkola, who worked the ball skilfully onto his favoured right foot. The Angolan dispatched a low drive towards the bottom corner, which took the slightest of touches off a defender’s heel, before finding the net for the equaliser. 2-2 and a fourth goal of the season for Nkola.

This equaliser sparked a frantic, chaotic spell of end-to-end action as both sides pushed to retake the lead. Utilising the strong wind, the hosts launched a barrage of direct long balls and fired two quick efforts wildly over the crossbar.
Missed Chances
In the 58th minute, Voženílek created utter havoc inside the opposition box following an exquisite long pass from Lopez. The Czech beat his man down the right and flashed a dangerous ball across the face of goal. Nkola got ahead of his defender and slid in to force a point-blank save, triggering a frantic goalmouth scramble that the Expats somehow failed to turn home.
Moments later, the Expats forged another opening as the ball broke to Wabiński inside the area. However, the forward hesitated in two minds whether to shoot, allowing the home defence to clear. It proved to be Wabiński’s final action of the match, with Ferreira replacing him with Barry Chowaniec shortly after.
The Dragoons continued to press, missing a golden opportunity in the 64th minute following a foul on Nkola. Enrico Forabosco swung a precise free-kick into the box, but despite leaping highest, Nkola could only steer his powerful header wide of the target.
Forabosco, as ever, remained at the heart of the Dragoons’ creative output, coming close again in the 70th minute. The Italian delivered a teasing cross into the heart of the box, where Chowaniec threw himself at the ball, only to completely miss his diving header.
Dragoons Punished
Disaster struck the Dragoons once again in the 80th minute as the hosts reclaimed the lead. Looking to spark an attack, Joseph Vargas carried the ball boldly out of defence. The centre-back fed Nkola, who attempted an entirely unnecessary heel-flick return pass. An alert opponent intercepted with ease and immediately launched a swift counter-attack into the vast space vacated by the defender.
Kędziora raced through on goal searching for his hat-trick, only for Obyrtacz to stand tall and save with his legs. The rebound fell straight to Dziura, whose delayed follow-up was heroically blocked on the line by Drobny. However, Kędziora reacted fastest to the loose ball, tucking it away to complete his hat-trick and put the hosts 3-2 ahead.
The Expats desperately chased a third equaliser in the dying embers, but they never truly threatened the resolute home defence again. Frustrations boiled over in the closing stages, with the referee issuing late yellow cards to both Forabosco and Nkola. The final whistle blew to condemn the Expats to their fourth defeat of the season. The result leaves the Dragoons in 9th place, but owing to results elsewhere, they sit just two points above the bottom of the table, with five teams below them.
Summary
Ultimately, missed chances, fatal individual errors, and self-inflicted wounds cost the Dragoons dearly once again. While individual lapses on the pitch directly altered the scoreline, and overall squad application offered little in the way of a solution.
Much like last weekend, the changes during the second half struggled to yield the desired reward for the Expats. While Flavio Nkola remained the primary threat on the left, withdrawing Voženílek, who was getting the better of his full-back, unintentionally removed a growing outlet on the right. Shortly after coming on, Chowaniec looked bright, stretching the home defence with his direct running and bringing teammates into play. However, moving him out wide to accommodate Giordano Zambon inadvertently reduced his impact through the middle, with Zambon finding it tough to establish a firm foothold in the game. Meanwhile, Fernando Gámez was kept on despite visibly stretching out his legs, being on a yellow card, and walking a tight-rope with further challenges.

Must Do Better
That said, tactical decisions can only do so much, the core of the problem lies squarely with the players on the pitch. The team on paper is in such a false position but football is not played on paper. Far too many players are strolling through matches, switching off at critical moments, and lacking the competitive aggression and footballing intelligence needed to see games out. The lack of basic discipline was evident long before kick-off, with several players turning up late despite explicit, repeated warnings regarding marathon traffic closures. Starting Vargas after such a disruption backfired, but the broader issue is a apparent lack of focus.
It feels as though instructions are falling on deaf ears, reflecting a disappointing lack of accountability toward the coaching staff’s preparation. When being supportive yields the same amateurish, repeated mistakes, a firmer stance may be required, perhaps introducing consequences at training to instil urgency. The Head Coach does not have a controller to play the game for his team. The players need to look long and hard in the mirror. This was a fixture firmly there for the taking, surrendered through sheer carelessness. Instead of looking toward the upper reaches of the table, the Dragoons are now forced to look over their shoulders at the relegation zone, and the squad should feel thoroughly embarrassed by that reality.
Next Up: Pychowianka Away
Next week, the Expats face a crucial, high-stakes encounter against Pychowianka. Their upcoming opponents recently lifted themselves off the bottom of the table last weekend, securing a morale-boosting 4-2 home victory over Iskra Krzęcin to end a run of five defeats.
Historically, clashes between the Dragoons and Pychowianka have been fiercely contested, and this fixture promises to be no different with both sides currently languishing in the lower reaches of the table.
Following their promotion from Klasa B last season, Pychowianka currently hold the record as the lowest scorers in the division. However, on a pitch that both clubs call home, past form often goes out the window. The Dragoons must dig deep, show real steel, and eliminate the careless, unforced errors that have plagued recent weeks. With three vital points on the line, the Expats simply cannot afford another disastrous collapse if they are to reignite their season.
