With Marcin Obyrtacz unavailable for selection, American goalkeeper Jake Hedrick returned in between the sticks for the home side. The Dragoons kept faith with the remaining defensive structure from last weekend’s frustrating fixture against Zwierzyniecki as Gracjan Bałuch and Giacomo Simonetti retained their respective places at right and left back for this encounter. Meanwhile, Kuba Drobny and Joseph Vargas continued their central defensive partnership to shield Hedrick in goal.
In midfield, Mateo Lopez, Enrico Forabosco, and Fernando Gámez all started once again to control the tempo. Up front, head coach Gonçalo Ferreira trusted the same attacking trio, with Martin Voženílek lining up on the right wing, while Flavio Nkola operated on the left. Finally, Jeremi Wabiński spearheaded the attack in the central forward position.
Kick Off
The match began with both sides struggling to establish early momentum or show composure on the ball. In fact, the visitors created the first opportunity after just three minutes following a defensive mistake from Joseph Vargas. The Colombian’s miscontrol saw the visitors drive forward with purpose. However, the weak incoming shot inside the box went wide, sparing the home team from an early setback.
The Expats gradually found their footing, and effective pressing by Jeremi Wabiński sparked their opening attempt of the match. In the 12th minute, Wabiński charged down a clearance and advanced toward the penalty area. Surrounding defenders quickly closed him down, forcing the attacker to curl a shot straight into the waiting hands of the goalkeeper.
Moments later, Gracjan Bałuch attempted to cut out a long, searching pass into the Dragoons half. His header fell straight to an opponent, but the resulting 25-yard strike flew safely wide.
The Dragoons kept pushing and earned a corner in the 16th minute. Enrico Forabosco delivered into the area, and although the visitors cleared, Fernando Gámez pounced on the loose ball to scuff a half-volley wide.
In the 19th minute, Forabosco showed his quality by dribbling past two opponents as if they were training cones. But after working so much space for himself, the midfield maestro lost his composure at the crucial second and sent his attempt sailing wide of the mark.
Close But No Cigar
Mateo Lopez produced the pass of the match on 24 minutes, floating a beautiful outside-of-the-foot trivela straight into the path of Wabiński. As the goalkeeper charged off his line, the Polish striker attempted a clever chip, but under heavy pressure, he could not find the right connection and the ball dropped wide of the post.
A foul on Wabiński at the half-hour mark offered Forabosco a shot from 30 yards out. On this occasion, the Italian couldn’t generate enough whip, sending his effort straight into the keeper’s gloves.
Panic immediately followed down the other end! A cross into the penalty area caused chaos as the ball ricocheted off Giacomo Simonetti’s shin and dropped to an opponent 12 metres out. Thankfully, the forward’s shot lacked power, allowing Jake Hedrick to show quick reactions to dive to his right and collect the ball securely.
The Expats kept pushing and nearly found the breakthrough in the 43rd minute. A short corner allowed Forabosco to cross for Drobny, who escaped the attentions of a defender to get to the ball first. However, the defenders cushioned header lacked power and the close proximity to the goal made an easy save for the keeper.
Just before the whistle, Bałuch put a ball on a silver platter across the six-yard box, but no Dragoons shirt made the run. Down the other end, Pychowianka launched a frantic counter instantly, with a forward chesting a long ball into the channel and putting in a cross that somehow evaded the diving header of a team-mate. It was another heart-in-mouth moment to end a half the Dragoons largely controlled. Plenty of style in midfield, but the Expats needed to bring their shooting boots for the second half.
Second Half
The Expats came out for the second half firing on all cylinders. Barely two minutes after the restart, Mateo Lopez slipped Martin Voženílek through behind the defense. The Czech winger stretched to poke the ball past the advancing keeper, who blocked the effort straight back to Voženílek. He quickly set up Gracjan Bałuch in space inside the penalty area, but the full-back shifted the ball onto his weaker left foot and sliced a wild shot high into the air. Miraculously, the ball stayed in play, allowing Enrico Forabosco to battle for a throw-in on the far touchline.
Bałuch was again in the thick of the action shortly after, pressing high up the pitch to intercept a loose pass. The Polish defender fed Forabosco, but the midfield magician appeared to have left his magic wand at home as he sent a powerful shot wide of the target.
In the 67th minute, Pychowianka caught the Dragoons completely off guard with a quick, low free-kick into the box. The home defence stood like statues, but fortunately, Jake Hedrick stayed sharp between the posts to smother another tame effort.
A Golden Chance
The Dragoons marched straight down the other end to create their best opening of the match in the 67th minute. Gracjan Bałuch drove forward with purpose and found Fernando Gámez, who slipped Flavio Nkola into space on the left side of the box. However, Nkola produced a touch like a trampoline as the ball bobbled into the air, making it extremely difficult to compose himself for a strike. The Angolan scuffed a weak effort straight at the keeper, and although the rebound fell kindly to Lopez, his follow-up was deflected over the crossbar. A golden opportunity passed for the Expats!
Pychowianka Down to Ten
The visitors found themselves down to ten men in the 69th minute when Andrii Solonets foolishly kicked the ball away following a whistle, picking up a second yellow card and an early shower.
With a man advantage, and the Dragoons struggling to breach a disciplined back-line, The Dragoons needed make a tactical tweak to force a breakthrough. Bałuch came off in the 76th minute to be replaced by Giordano Zambon, transitioning the Dragoons to a three-at-the-back system and throwing more men into advanced positions.
Having a man advantage did not make the task any easier, as the Dragoons found themselves blocked by a stubborn defensive block. Substitute Robin da Silva immediately got involved, firing over the bar and then taking a yellow after almost gifting the visitors a chance to break. Pychowianka threatened on the counter when they could, but the Expats stood firm, limiting them to shots from distance that Hedrick dealt with cleanly.
As the clock ticked down into the last five minutes, the Dragoons turned up the heat with a late flurry of chances. Rob Smits just missed out on a dangerous through-ball into the box, forcing a corner. From the resulting delivery, Zambon rose highest in the crowd, but the Italian could only flash his header wide of the post.
In the 88th minute, agony struck for the home side. Mirko Barile released Nkola on the wing, who used clever footwork to try and engineer space. Surrounded by three defenders, Nkola spotted Barile in space and laid the ball back to the edge of the box. The Italian forward took a touch to set himself and curled a shot toward the far corner, only to watch it hit the inside of the post and bounce away to safety.
Smits Delivers At The Death
Just as it looked like a frustrating draw was written in the stars, the breakthrough finally arrived in the 89th minute from the resulting corner. Nkola whipped a wicked, curling delivery right into the six-yard box. Ghosting in completely unmarked, Smits threw himself at the ball to power a header into the net to give his team a late lead! The Dutchmeester’s rare headed goal sparked wild celebrations and palpable relief across the pitch and bench as the goal had seen the hard work finally payoff.

The Expats professionally managed the remaining stoppage time to lock down a hard-fought 1-0 victory. Taking all three points lifts the Dragoons up to 8th place with 11 points, providing a welcome morale boost and a cushion above the bottom teams.
Summary: Job Done
It certainly was not a classic for the neutral spectator, but the Dragoons showed grit and character to fight until the very last whistle. The Expats controlled plenty of possession throughout the afternoon, yet often struggled to make it count in the final third, frequently rushing passes, taking unnecessary extra touches, or overcooking long balls. While direct football can be effective, the Dragoons need to be smarter with where and when they dispatch passes to the flanks to maximise their threat. Too often, possession broke down in advanced areas due to a missing final ball and the Expats really need to improve how they break teams down.
Pychowianka defended with discipline, but lacked quality going forward and failed to capitalise on the Dragoons’s errors. So often the Expats are left ruing a lapse in concentration, but on this occasion, the visitors lacked the sharpness to punish them. The result was a scrappy affair between two sides searching for confidence. In the end, fresh legs off the bench and a rare headed winner from Rob Smits got the job done. It may not have been the prettiest performance, but it was a crucial morale-boosting win to get the season back on track.

Next Up: Cedronka Away
Next week, the Expats embark on their longest road trip of the season to face second-bottom Cedronka Wola Radziszowska. While Cedronka have scored just one goal fewer than the Dragoons, their league-joint worst tally of 34 goals conceded presents a prime opportunity for the Expats to build momentum. The hosts started the campaign brightly with four points from their opening two matches before a four-game losing streak saw them plummet toward the lower end of the table. A dramatic last-gasp 4–3 win over Nadwiślan Kraków provided a momentary spark on home soil, but they swiftly crashed back down to earth last weekend with a 3–0 defeat at Iskra Krzęcin ahead of their first-ever meeting with the Dragoons.
