Recap

Two From Two

The Dragoons maintained their winning momentum on Sunday, securing a 2-1 victory over SF Fairant on a cold, gloomy Sunday.

Following the last minute victory over Zywierzyniecki last weekend, Gonçalo Ferreira made two changes to the side for the battle against Fairant.

Marcin Obyrtacz continued in goal behind an unchanged back four. Szymon Urzędowski and Koki Oe occupied the full-back positions, while Roman Bilovol again partnered Kuba Drobny at the heart of the defence.

In midfield, Enrico Forabosco returned to captain the side and anchor the middle, replacing Bernabé García who dropped to the bench. The midfield magician was joined by Rob Smits and Fernando Gámez in a dynamic central trio. Leading the line, Obed Sánchez spearheaded the attack, supported by Flavio Nkola on the left flank following his man-of-the-match performance last week. Completing the lineup, Giordano Zambon made his Dragoons debut, replacing Mirko Barile on the right wing.

Kick Off

A pensive start saw both sides make their intentions clear. Fairant kicking the game off immediately looked to hit the right flank with the ball rolling through to Obyrtacz. The Dragoons on the other hand attempted to get the ball down and control possession of the ball, with patient build-up play.

Neither side could get into any early rhythm with Fairant showing their danger from a long throw early on. However, a flicked header proved no problem for Obyrtacz in the 7th minute of the game.

Dragoons Take The Lead

The breakthrough arrived in the 10th minute with the Dragoons converting their first real attack of the game. Enrico Forabosco, waved his wand of a left foot to float a precise pass out wide to the overlapping Koki Oe. Showing good footwork to get past his opposing full-back, the Japanese defender clipped a dangerous cross into the area. The ball landed straight onto the head of Obed Sánchez, who escaped the attention of his marker to send a firm header into the net past the despairing dive of Borowski. 1-0 and just the start the Dragoons asked for!

Fairant attempted to respond immediately, but a speculative long-range effort sailed harmlessly wide of Marcin Obyrtacz’s goal.

Expats Put on the Pressure

By the 22nd minute, the Dragoons were on top and knocking on the door again. Forabosco rolled back the years to steal possession high and played in Fernando Gámez down the right side of the box. The Canarian King fired a low cross toward Sánchez for a tap in, but Bartek Batko bravely dived at the Colombian’s feet to block the Expats doubling their lead.

Shortly after, the Dragoons worked another good chance to score a second goal. On this occasion, Flavio Nkola pulled the ball back for Rob Smits who found himself free inside the area. Unfortunately, the Dutchmeester leant back too far and blasted his attempt cleanly over the bar.

Double Delight for Sánchez

The pressure finally told in the 25th minute as the Dragoons clinched an all important second goal. Koki Oe battled well to win the ball high up the pitch from a Fairant throw-in. He showed good pace get to the byline and picked out Sánchez inside the box with a cut-back. The Colombian dropped his shoulder to shift the ball onto his left foot and smashed it home across the keeper for his and the Expats’ second goal of the game.

Following the goal, the Dragoons looked to take the game by the scruff of the neck. The Expats kept the ball well and controlled the game without really threatening. Fairant struggled to work any opportunities and found themselves frustrated by a resolute Dragoons back-line, until…

Fairant Strike Back

With a two-goal cushion, the Dragoons appeared comfortable until a penalty kick gifted the visitors a lifeline. In the 38th minute, a long-throw into the box saw the ball spin off the turf and hit Roman Bilovol on the arm. The referee pointed to the spot and Andrzej Pierwola stepped up and firmly struck the penalty into the corner to make it 2-1.

Just before the interval, Nkola worked his way into the box, with a chop dumping Batko onto his backside. The Angolan made a shooting opportunity for himself, but his subsequent effort was blocked and cleared away.

Shortly after, the whistle blew to the half. The Expats had largely been in control of proceedings and despite not threatening too much, Fairant had shown their danger to win the penalty.

Second Half

The second half began with the Dragoons looking to restore their two-goal advantage through the powerful running of Nkola. In the 48th minute, he burst through the midfield and slid a pass to Sánchez, who poked the ball past the keeper. However, it rolled agonisingly wide of the post as the Colombian searched for his hat-trick under heavy pressure by a defender.

Fairant Pressure

At the other end, the visitors had a spell of pressure and regained possession high in the Dragoons half. Fairant worked the ball over to the left flank, with Wojtek Miszczyk’s weakly struck shot resulting in a rather unorthodox save from the boot of Obyrtacz.

Fairant continued their search for an equaliser, as Kuba Drobny and Roman Bilovol were kept busy at the back, with Drobny clearing a half chance away and winning a free-kick in the process.

Just a minute later, and the Dragoons attacked the Fairant goal with purpose on the counter. Fernando Gámez advanced with the ball and found Smits advanced up the pitch. The Dutchmeester sent Nkola through on goal at an angle, but a defender recovered well to block the shot.

Tactical Changes

As the match entered the final half-hour, both sides turned to their benches. Mirko Barile entered the fray for debutant Zambon, and Forabosco soon found his fellow Italian with a pass 25 metres from goal. However, Barile’s subsequent shot lacked the venom required to trouble Borowski in the Fairant goal.

The visitors showed their danger from set pieces once again in the 68th minute. A foul by the Dragoons saw the ball come into the box with Miszczyk rising highest to head firmly at goal. On this occasion, the ball bounced off the top of the crossbar and out of play for a goal-kick. A warning sign to the Expats.

Sensing the need for fresh legs, the Dragoons introduced Omar Atzori and Bernabé García to try and restore midfield domination. Despite the changes, the Dragoons continued to frustrate themselves by failing to find the final pass in attack time and time again.

Dragoons Counter

In the 77th minute, the Expats came forward and finally worked a shooting opportunity. Gámez found Sánchez with a pass, 25 metres from the goal. The Colombian sent a snap-shot at goal, but could only shoot straight at Borowski to comfortably save.

Minutes later, Nkola showed power to drive off the flank and clip a pass into Sánchez, who held it up and returned it. Nkola managed to get off a shot, but a weak effort took a knick off a defender and rolled safely into Borowski’s arms as the clock ticked down.

The final minutes saw Mateo Lopez, Adrian Paliś, and Jeremi Wabiński all introduced to see out the result The latter making his debut appearance. Fairant pushed men forward in desperation for an equaliser, but their final effort in the 89th minute was blasted high and wide.

As the game drew to a close, the Dragoons held firm to secure the 2-1 win and celebrate three points for a consecutive week. The victory saw the Expats rise to 6th in the table, leapfrogging their opponents at the same time.

Despite a composed defensive showing, the Expats struggled to find any real cohesion while in possession during the second half. All too often, rushed long-balls and misplaced passes stopped promising moves in their tracks. These frequent errors prevented the Dragoons from truly threatening the scoresheet and extending their lead.

Make no bones about it, the Expats fully deserved the three points on the day. However, the side must focus on better decision-making and ball retention moving forward. On too many occasions, the Dragoons squandered chances to kill the game through poor passes, over-complication and unnecessarily long passes that Fairant easily cut out. Ultimately, such tardiness could easily have been punished by a more clinical and better opponent.

Next Up: Opatkowianka Kraków

The Dragoons will look to extend their winning streak next weekend against Opatkowianka Kraków, who currently sit in 12th position. Their opponents possess the leakiest defence in the league, having conceded 47 goals in their 14 matches so far.

Historically, this is a fixture the Expats have enjoyed, having triumphed 7-0 in their last meeting. The Expats cruised to victory thanks to a Fernando Gámez hat-trick, with further goals from Jan Kołodziejski, Szymon Urzędowski, and Enrico Forabosco. Yuri Samyonov added a last-minute tap-in to round off the scoring, despite the Dragoons playing the final 20 minutes with ten men after Omar Atzori’s second yellow card earned the Italian an early bath.
