PortugalA true stalwart of the Dragoons, Hugo hails from Águeda, Portugal, and has been surrounded by football since he was a child. Growing up playing with his older cousins, he naturally gravitated to defence, eventually becoming a centre-back and defensive all-rounder at Recreio Desportivo de Águeda. His early career was promising, but a series of serious knee injuries forced him to hang up his boots.
Arriving in Kraków in 2016, Hugo joined the early kickabouts that would evolve into the Dragoons. Even when sidelined from playing, he quickly became a central figure, helping coach alongside Diego Villanueva under Head Coach Ashvin Asani. His understanding of the game and leadership qualities made the transition from player to coach seamless.
Despite his injuries, Hugo briefly returned to the pitch in 2021 and 2022, most memorably scoring for the Dragoons in the Fenix Trophy against AFC DWS, a moment that epitomised his resilience.
After Asani’s departure in May 2023, Hugo stepped up as Interim Head Coach before assuming the role permanently. He guided the team through an exceptionally tough transitional period, leading the Dragoons to a 6th-place finish in Klasa A Kraków Grupa I in his first full season in charge. Beyond the touchline, Hugo has been instrumental in training, matchday preparation, administration, and long-term club planning, often carrying the burden of multiple roles with professionalism and dedication.
Hugo’s philosophy has always centred on unity, integrity, and inclusivity, both on and off the pitch. Under his stewardship, the Dragoons have grown in stature and culture, blending competitive ambition with a family ethos.
Following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, Hugo stepped down as Head Coach but remains at the heart of the club as Director of Football, shaping the long-term vision. His impact, both seen and unseen, ensures his legacy as one of the most influential figures in the club’s short history so far.
