Expats Clinch Deserved Victory

The Krakow Dragoons secured all three points during a rare Thursday evening match against a struggling Iskra Krzęcin. Consequently, the Expats successfully inflicted further misery on the hosts in this penultimate game of the season, extending the opposition’s horrid winless run.

Furthermore, Gonçalo Ferreira’s side played infinitely better this week compared to last Sunday’s hangover-filled catastrophe against Podgórze, proving that playing on a school night drastically reduces the chances of a pre-match hangover.

Kick-Off

Initially, a quick start by the hosts saw Gabriel Muñoz called into action within the opening three minutes of the match. The Chilean stopper got down well to prevent Iskra from taking an early lead, showing good reflexes to keep the scores level.

Moments after, Adrian Paliś saw his powerful header tipped over the bar by the opposition goalkeeper as the Dragoons launched their own foray forward.

The Expats continued their forward momentum, and Enrico Forabosco almost capitalised on a glaring error from the Iskra defence. The midfield magician found time and space to shoot low at goal, forcing the Iskra keeper, Karol Bober, to push the ball behind.

Nkola Opens the Scoring

Because the game started at such a quick pace, it did not take long for the breakthrough to arrive in the tenth minute. Enrico Forabosco flung in a precise corner, and Flavio Nkola found himself completely unmarked to thump a header home past the stranded Bober.

Iskra Restores Parity

They say you are always at your most vulnerable immediately after scoring, and that cliché proved to be true here. Unfortunately, the Dragoons’ lead lasted a mere two minutes before Iskra ruthlessly struck back to equalise. The hosts exploited a gap on the Dragoons’ left flank, with a cross finding an attacker on the edge of the box. Following a good block by Jan Krzyżanowski, the rebound landed kindly for Tomasz Urant, who made no mistake with his low finish past Muñoz for 1-1.

With twenty minutes on the clock, the hosts came close again from a dangerous free-kick. However, Muñoz proved equal to the effort, flying spectacularly to his left and getting two firm fists to punch the ball away for a corner. A classic Gabi save for the cameras!

Dragoons Push for the Lead

Subsequently, the Expats continued to threaten down the other end of the pitch. Adrian Paliś and Koki Oe both had decent efforts at goal, but both shots lacked the necessary venom and were comfortably handled by the busy Bober.

As the half rolled on, the Expats looked to dominate possession while the hosts attempted to counter with long balls that the Expats dealt with well.

In the thirty-eighth minute, Flavio Nkola took control of a throw, spun sharply, and sent a vicious low shot just wide of the post, nearly taking the paint off the upright.

The Dragoons continued pushing for the lead, and a ball into the box was cleared only as far as Jan Krzyżanowski. The Dragoons’ youngest player of all time worked the ball onto his left foot but lashed his shot wide of the target.

Iskra Briefly Threaten

Gabi Muñoz had to be alert to keep the Dragoons level on the stroke of halftime. Koki Oe’s misplaced header went straight to an opponent, and the resulting long-range shot forced the Expats’ keeper into another smart save to keep the scores level.

In the forty-fourth minute, the final chance of the half came for the Dragoons through Koki Oe. The Japanese full-back won possession high up the pitch, but his final effort flew high, wide, and handsome when well placed.

The referee blew his whistle dead on forty-five minutes as the sides went into the break level. While the Dragoons had enjoyed the better of the chances, Iskra had been clinical when needed, leaving the match finely poised.

Second Half

Iskra started the second half quickly and came close to taking the lead in the forty-seventh minute. Roman Bilovol hesitated with a long ball, allowing an opponent to run clean through on goal, though thankfully the incoming shot flew agonisingly wide of the upright.

Dragoons back into the Lead

The Expats went straight down the other end and instantly seized control of the game with a second goal two minutes later. Quick thinking from Forabosco saw the Italian take a short corner to Koki Oe, who sent a gorgeous curling effort into the top corner. It was an absolute peach of a goal, leaving the Iskra defence standing around with their pants down.

Changes Made

In the fifty-fourth minute, the Expats made a double change, with Forabosco trudging off alongside Mirko Barile. Rob Smits returned from injury to enter the fray alongside Martin Voženílek.

Two minutes later, Voženílek knocked the ball forward with Paliś putting Bernabé García through on the right. The Spaniard drilled a fierce effort across goal from a tight angle, forcing Bober into a flying save to keep the hosts alive.

On the hour mark, a triple change saw Barry Chowaniec, Brian Lemmen, and Giordano Zambon enter to replace Paliś, García, and Flavio Nkola.

Moments after the change, the Dragoons again came close from a set-piece. On this occasion, Smits launched a free-kick into the box, but Roman Bilovol failed to make clean contact with his header when well placed.

Free-Kick Fun

A foul earned Jeremi Wabiński a booking and a severe touch of cramp, ending his first start on sixty-two minutes. Corneille Malonga and Szymon Urzędowski entered to replace the stricken Pole and Mateo Lopez.

From the following free-kick, Muñoz brilliantly denied the hosts with another iconic flying save. The keeper got crucial fingertips to the ball to divert it narrowly wide of the post, showcasing his inner cat yet again.

K***a Bober

Three minutes later, the Dragoons had a free-kick of their own from thirty-five metres out. Roman Bilovol stepped up and sent a fierce effort that Bober could only spill, but Krzyżanowski drilled his rebound straight at the keeper, who showed excellent reflexes to prevent the Expats going further ahead.

On seventy-three minutes, another dangerous free-kick fell the way of Iskra. Once again, Muñoz could not be defeated, flying across goal to tip the ball against the crossbar and over the goal. Close, but absolutely no cigar for the hosts.

Blistering Counter

From the resulting corner, the Dragoons withstood the pressure and Bilovol smashed the ball clear to send Voženílek galloping down the right. The Czech winger cut past a defender and passed to Giordano Zambon, who side-footed a first-time effort into the bottom corner. It was a milestone first goal in Dragoons colours for Zambon, perfectly quelling the pressure from the hosts.

Free-Kick Cuts the Deficit

Just like the first half, Iskra battled back to score shortly after the Expats’ third. Malonga was adjudged to have committed a foul, allowing Maciej Zięcik to curl a precise free-kick beyond the reach of Muñoz to set up a tense finale at 3-2. The Chilean stopped got fingertips to the ball, but not enough to keep the ball out of the net.

Penalty Awarded to Dragoons

In the eightieth minute, calm defending from Brian Lemmen allowed the Dutchman to win the ball and spark a counter-attack. A sequence of quick passes found Bartek Chowaniec, who beat Oscar Nunes with a deft touch and entered a foot-race with the defender, who could only stop the attacker with a foul inside the box. The referee didn’t hesitate for a second and pointed straight to the spot.

With Rob Smits suffering a re-occurrence of his ankle issue and hobbling around the pitch, Roman Bilovol confidently stepped up, looked the keeper in the eye, and absolutely smashed the penalty into the top corner for 4-2.

As the hosts pushed forward, the Dragoons found space to counter. Urzędowski played in Chowaniec, who looked to work a shooting chance and evenutally went down under a challenge inside the box for a second time. However, the referee remained unmoved, and Urzędowski ran onto the loose ball to drive an effort just wide via a deflection.

Hard-Fought Victory Secured

Shortly after, the referee blew the final whistle after five minutes of injury time to secure the win. A return to winning ways will undoubtedly give Ferreira’s men a massive confidence boost as the team goes into the final game of the campaign.

Next Up: The Finale

Next up, we end the season at Bieżanowianka next Sunday, a pitch fondly remembered in Dragoonslore. Interestingly, it will be a final day with absolutely no promotion stakes for either side for once! This stands in stark contrast to previous final-day meetings on the same pitch, where the Expats famously secured promotion to Klasa A on their turf with a 5-2 win against Bieżanowianka II.

Bieżanowianka later beat the Dragoons 6-2 in highly controversial fashion to go up to Okręgowa a couple of years ago, with the Dragoons threatening to spoil the party, only for some dubious refereeing decisions seeing the Expats go down to nine men and Gabi Muñoz making a one and only outfield appearance in attack!

In our previous meeting, the sides battled out a chaotic draw. Manuel Rangel opened the scoring with an excellent flying header, but a brief two-minute disaster class from Serhii Yelysieiev gifted Bieżanowianka two quickfire goals to take a thoroughly undeserved lead. Thankfully, the Expats kept battling, and a Chowaniec shot deflected off Obed Sánchez to level the scores. Hopefully, the Dragoons can end the season on a high!
