The Expats returned to home turf this past weekend for a difficult fixture against second-place Kolejarz-Prokocim Kraków.
Following the 1-1 draw with Cedronka the week previous, Gonçalo Ferreira made several changes to his line up.

Jake Hedrick on four hours sleep after newborn daddy duties replaced Marcin Obyrtacz in goal. Giacomo Simonetti’s illness saw Szymon Urzędowski return at left-back, at right-back Gracjan Bałuch continued, with Kuba Drobny and Joseph Vargas starting at centre-backs.
In the middle, one change was made. Jeremi Wabiński returned to the line-up in the place of Robin Da Silva who dropped to the bench. Mateo Lopez and Rob Smits kept their places in the middle of the park.
In the attack, Bartek Chowaniec started centrally, with Mirko Barile fresh off scoring his first goal started again on the left and on the right Martin Voženílek came in. Giordano Zambon dropped to the bench.
Kick Off
The Dragoons start the game extremely well and went into the lead in just four minutes. The Expats forced a couple of early corners and Rob Smits’ kick found Mirko Barile, who rose majestically to steer home a headed effort for 1-0.

However, that would be the end of the momentum for the Expats as the visitors quickly responded with intense pressure. Jake Hedrick produced a magnificent save inside the opening eight minutes after a soft free kick caused total chaos. The American goalkeeper wrong-footed himself initially, but stuck out a bear-like paw to keep the ball out. The ball fell straight to an opponent in front of goal, but the Big Yank scrambled brilliantly to somehow block a close-range tap-in.
Kolejarz continued to dominate the ball as the half progressed through the early stages. One again, Hedrick made a huge block in the thirteenth minute after a cross caught the home defence standing entirely still. The ball fell to an opponent at the far post, but again the American got down to make an outstanding save.
The Expats struggled to see any meaningful possession in the middle of the pitch as the game progressed. Jeremi Wabiński tried to spark an attack in the eighteenth minute, but he failed to generate power on a routine shot straight at the goalkeeper. Shortly after, Bartek Chowaniec slid an effort narrowly wide following a slick cross from Martin Voženílek that fell to the Pole from a heavy touch from a defender.
Kolejarz Score
The visitors eventually punished the Dragoons for surrendering possession easily once again in the thirty-eighth minute. The Dragoons looked to move the ball far too quickly, with a risky pass to Lopez seeing the Colombian looking to find Voženílek on the wing. Capitalising on the misplaced pass, the visitors burst forward with an unstoppable curling strike into the net from range. It would have to take something special to beat Hedrick and there was nothing the keeper could do to keep the effort out.
Immediately afterward, Kolejarz came forward once again. Hedrick made another sharp save before a defensive mistake let the visitors blast another attempt wide.
Before the interval, Kolejarz sliced another golden opportunity. The Expats surrendered possession too easily and an opponent went one on one with Hedrick. But a panicked shot saw the ball sail miles wide of the goal.
Despite their quick start, the Expats had been completely second best during the half and could not deal with the press of an extremely well organised Kolejarz side. Despite fashioning a good chance for Chowaniec, the Expats had not been able to truly test the visitors backline and were perhaps fortunate to be level at the break.
Second-Half
The second period began with immediate pressure from the visitors. First, Kolejarz smashed an early free kick straight into the defensive wall. Next, a quick set-piece forced Hedrick into another diving save.
Visitors Go Ahead
However, the pressure finally told in the sixty-sixth minute when Kolejarz took the lead. The Dragoons struggled to contain the visitors and a curled effort from the edge of the box found the top corner of the net.
The Dragoons desperately attempted to find a response. Rob Smits blasted an effort over the crossbar when well-placed inside the area. Frustrations boiled over continuously as Mateo Lopez picked up a yellow card for an off-the-ball foul.
Consequently, discipline completely disintegrated in the closing stages. Robin da Silva entered the book in the seventy-fifth minute. Soon after, Jake Hedrick received a straight red card in the eightieth minute causing a ruckus on the pitch. As an opponent ran through, the stopper flew of his line and in his attempt to stop a dinked effort over his head, he horribly collided with the Kolejarz man. It looked a scene from a car crash and we send our best wishes to the young man.
With no substitute goalkeeper available, substitute. Oscar Nunes bravely pulled on the jersey to stand between the post and made a couple of saves to keep the scoreline 2-1.
The situation worsened dramatically when Adrian Paliś received a red card in the ninetieth minute alongside a booking for Flavio Nkola. Ultimately, the nine remaining Dragoons players fought valiantly, yet the match ended in a bruising defeat.
Following the defeat, the Dragoons slipped down to tenth place in the league table and sit four points off the relegation zone.
Summary
A bitter tasting defeat for the Expats. Kolejarz-Prokocim won the midfield battle, with the Dragoons chasing shadows for most of the game. The visitors looked well organised and disciplined throughout.
Meanwhile, the home side struggled to put together any real cohesive moves and looked a little out of sorts. Ferreira’s side failed to work to instruction and the team looked like their minds were not in the game.
Frustrations boiled in the second half with the Expats continuously second best to the ball and lacked any sort of cohesion. The team seem to struggle with their organisation and shape both in and out of possession.
It’s clear there is talent in the team, they just need to keep working hard, stop panicking in possession and conceding sloppy goals.
Next Up: Bieżanowianka Away
Next, the Dragoons travel away to face Bieżanowianka in the penultimate fixture before the winter break. Ninth-place Bieżanowianka sit just one point ahead of the Expats after recording four wins, one draw, and six defeats this campaign.
History shows this fixture guarantees high drama. Last season, mistakes cost the Dragoons a certain win in a frustrating home draw. Furthermore, the corresponding away fixture saw the team fall three goals behind before Koki Oe and Barry Chowaniec mounted an incredible comeback despite being down to ten men. Although an unlikely equaliser narrowly eluded them on the final day, the side showed immense character that is desperately needed. Both teams desperately require points this weekend, so expect a fiercely contested battle.
